Hospital Refurbishment, Rotherham

Client: The Rotherham NHS Foundation Trust

Community Diagnostics Centre (CDC)

A scheme to refurbish and convert an existing building into the a new CDC unit as part of the national government programme.

The client’s brief was to accommodate a new Respiratory Unit, Diagnostics Department, Cardiology Suite and Breast Screening Clinic in one facility. Following a feasibility study, neither of the two available existing buildings could accommodate the schedule of accommodation for all the facilities required.

As a result, in the first phase, the Respiratory Unit was designed and delivered within the existing Breathing Space building. To remain operational, a phased strategy was developed to refurbish the ground floor consulting rooms so they were functional whilst the first floor works were carried out.

Due to the existing building utilising natural ventilation, challenges to equip the new facility with the required mechanical ventilation were overcome through the design team collaboration.

The unit is up and running, offering improved services and clinical pathways for the local community while phase two of the project is still to be developed.
