IKON Architects Achieves Carbon Neutral Status – Leading the Way in Sustainable Healthcare Architecture
We are proud to announce that IKON Architects is now officially Carbon Neutral, following a comprehensive assessment of our carbon footprint in line with ISO 14064-1:2018 standards. This achievement marks a significant milestone in our commitment to sustainability and environmental responsibility.
As an architectural practice specialising in healthcare architecture for private healthcare providers and the NHS, this step is more than a certification—it’s a statement of intent. The NHS has a government mandate to achieve Net Zero by 2040 for its own emissions and by 2045 for its wider supply chain, as outlined in its Green Plan guidance. By operating as a Carbon Neutral practice, we actively support these goals and help our clients meet their sustainability commitments.
Our carbon neutrality was achieved through a detailed analysis of emissions from energy use, travel, and operations, followed by investment in verified carbon offset projects. We chose to support UK-based woodland creation projects, which include sites in Yorkshire, where we are based. These projects are national in scope—just like our own work—and aim to restore native woodland, improve biodiversity, and protect local ecosystems. We felt this was a fitting choice that reflects both our local roots and our nationwide coverage.
At IKON, our ethos has always been People – Places – Planet. Becoming Carbon Neutral reinforces this philosophy and demonstrates that sustainability is not just part of our design approach—it’s embedded in how we operate as a business.
By achieving carbon neutrality, IKON joins a select group of UK architectural practices leading the way in sustainability. This milestone reflects our commitment to creating architecture that is innovative, responsible, and beneficial for both people and the planet.
Transparency and Compliance
For full transparency, you can view our Carbon Reduction Plan, published in line with PPN 006 requirements for suppliers on publicly funded projects, on our website. This plan outlines our commitment to achieving Net Zero by 2050 and the measures we are taking to reduce emissions.
We are also preparing for the NHS Evergreen Sustainable Supplier Assessment, a key framework for suppliers to demonstrate alignment with NHS sustainability priorities. This ensures we remain ahead of evolving procurement requirements and continue to support the NHS in delivering its Net Zero ambitions.
What’s Next?
Our journey doesn’t stop here. We will continue to monitor and reduce our emissions year-on-year, ensuring that our projects and operations align with the highest standards of environmental responsibility.
