Emergency Department, Bradford

Client: Bradford Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust

A reconfiguration scheme of the existing A&E to increase bed capacity, improve routes and efficiencies bringing the department in line with the Big Front Door model of care. Drawing from the team’s extensive experience in process optimisation and strategic planning especially in delivering cutting edge Emergency Departments in the US, our involvement started with our in-house healthcare planners working with the Trust clinical, management and estate teams reviewing existing data and developing a strategy that would deliver the modern model of care with inbuilt future growth for 10 years. The scheme then sprang from the architectural team when asked to come up with a sketch design that would deliver the strategy.

The biggest challenge on the scheme was to keep the department operational 24/7 with minimal disruptions. The project was successfully delivered in four phases on time and on budget with the clinical teams delighted with the modern, fresh and well-detailed well-coordinated design that delivers the new model of care and their aspirations.

The Paediatric Consultant involved in the scheme on behalf of the clinical team said ‘We really appreciate all the hard work that’s going into making our children’s area so lovely and your fab design ideas’.
